Take a break from adulthood and make a custom Peter Pan costume for the child who never ages. The included pattern can be enlarged to any size and both men and women can go on adventures.
2 1/2 yards of green fabric
1/2 yard of green felt
1/2 yard of brown felt
Leather belt or trim
Jersey fabric or green tights
Make a Shirt
Step 1: Measure for the Pattern
Measure around the shoulders of the person who will wear the costume. Place the measuring tape around the chest, arms and back, with arms down. Divide this measurement by four to find the “pattern width.” For example, if the circumfrence around the shoulders is 40 inches, the pattern width would be 10 inches.
Step 2: Cut Out the Pattern
Print out the pattern pieces and enlarge them until the pattern width on the pattern is the same measurement as the pattern width from step 1. Cut out the paper pattern pieces and place them on the green fabric as shown. Cut one front piece, one back piece, and one collar.
Turn the collar up and press the seam allowance toward the body of the shirt. Stitch on the body of the shirt, 1/8 inch from the neckline seam, including the seam allowance in the stitch. This is called an “understitch” which keeps the collar in place.
Make a Hat
Step 1: Pattern and Cut
Place the tape measure at the wearer’s forehead, where the hat will sit and measure the wearer’s head. Divide that measurement by two. Place the tape measure on top of the felt and draw a triangle around the tape measure, following the photograph. Cut two identical triangle pieces.
Step 2: Sew
With both pattern pieces together, sew along the top and back sides of the hat, leaving the bottom open.
Step 3: Turn Up End
Turn the hat right-side out. Fold up the back side a couple inches.
Step 1: Cut the PIeces
Measure the length of the shoe that the shoe cover will be worn over. Place that measurement flat on the felt, and draw the shape of a shoe following the image, leaving 3/4 inch allowance at either end of the tape measure. Cut four identical pieces out of felt to make one pair of shoe covers.
A pair of green tights is the ultimate addition to a Peter Pan costume. Leggings will also work. Look in the hosiery department as well as athletic wear to find the perfect shade of green. Tie leather trim around the waist or use a brown belt to cinch in the shirt at the waist.
